Rocket Copters Review
Rocket Copters – also branded as Arrow Rocket Copters and Night Copters – are an amazingly fun As Seen on TV toy that is especially fun to play with on the darkest of nights. They are simple and fun.
Just switch on the LED light (batteries included) and shoot them up to 120 feet into the sky with the included slingshots. Then enjoy the bright helicopter like action as they rotate back to earth. Just don’t be surprised if your neighbors come running outside thinking there is an alien invasion. 🙂
Multiple Use Toy Rocket Copters
Rocket Copters can be launched over and over and the batteries last a long time – through days or weeks of use if batteries are powered off when not being used. And although the batteries are not supposed to be replaceable there is a hack we will explain later to replace the batteries.
The Rocket Copters, however, are a bit fragile. The LED lights on some may stop working after a few uses. But by employing the hack we will describe, you can have them operating again quite easily.
Rocket Copters Are Suitable For Ages 8 To Adult
The actual Rocket Copters brand states that the toy is suitable for ages 8 and up. However, at least one other brand (listed in our Price Comparison below) recommends their copters for ages 3 and up. And yet another recommends their brand for ages 15 and up. Most likely, this is due to differing power of the slingshot launchers and/or use of a different launching mechanism. Regardless, kids and young adults really enjoy playing with Rocket Copters at night. Just make sure there is enough open space so the Rocket Copters won’t come down on roofs or in trees.

What Do Purchasers Think About Rocket Copters
The average customer review on Amazon is 4.0 out of 5 from over 500 reviewers. Here is a brief sampling of what they typically have to say.
“Very nice product! I purchased these for my daughter and her best friend. They have hours of fun and these really do fly high, as long as you have the strength to pull back hard on the sling. My daughter is 6 and it flys about 30 – 40 feet in the air. When myself or my husband pull it back, it flys the 120 feet. I do recommend these.”
“My boys are rough and have played with them 3x for a few hours each time. All of the copters still work. Fun for the entire family on our camping trips!”
“Best toy ever but I would not let your kids under 15 play with it”
“So fun on our camping trip! I was impressed how much they could take – 6 kids from 4-15 launched them over and over again. One stopped working but no matter – there are 6 and only 3 launchers so if one rocket stops working just grab another. Very inexpensive fun!”
“Fly great, better launcher than others, slower drop than others.”
Most users report that their kids and even the adults were impressed with the Rocket Copters. They seem to be inexpensive fun for much of the family.
What Purchasers Found Wrong With Rocket Copters
As we mentioned earlier, as an inexpensive toy Rocket Copters are not very durable. By far the main complaint turns out to be the durability issue.
“One of the lights doesn’t stay on. Kids have fun with them. They have lasted at least 20 launches as of now. Two of them are showing signs of ripping on the wings.”
“When these work, they are fantastic! Both the kids and I (dad) love them. They can go really high, look cool, and float down for a while. My 4 and 8 year olds can fly them just fine. The problem is the simple interior electronics aren’t great and are guaranteed to break within minutes. Some break sooner than others. There are just three parts: A battery set, LED, and Switch. The problem is the connection between the battery/ LED and the battery/Switch is not good. You can easily fix them though. Just unwrap the tape, use a small flat head to pry open the clam shell housing, and bend the little metal taps so they exert pressure on the battery. I actually cut the LED wire a little bit shorter to make better connection. You do not need to replace the tape, since they will stay together. Once doing this, they seem to work ok, but may fail again. I only recommend these if you can deal with basic electronics.”
“Total junk. Didn’t last but a few launches. If you don’t catch them, they break and the lights don’t work. Kind of pointless since you are playing with them in the dark. As I roll my eyes just now.”
“Fun in the 2 hours that they lasted. Sadly, the plastic piece on the rockets broke fairly quickly and all but one survived for the second night. I wish they were more durable.”
Many users seemed to have a problem with durability. Although everyone seemed to enjoy them immensely when they work, it sounds like “Dad” needs to be ready to do some quick repairs to keep the lights operational or to purchase a larger quantity.
Rocket Copter Battery And Repair Hack
What to do if the lights stop working – Although they are not intended to be user serviceable, you can easily repair non-functioning Rocket Copters in this manner.
First peel off the colored band on the rocket. Using a small screwdriver pry open the cover at the switch. Inside you will find 3 batteries wrapped together. Gently remove the batteries paying attention to the electrical orientation. Where the batteries sit inside the rocket there are 2 little pins that contact the bottom of the battery group. With the small screwdriver carefully pry up the 2 pins so they will contact battery group better. Then just re-install the battery group, paying attention to the original electrical orientation, and snap the cover back on. It’s not necessary to replace the colored band as the Rocket will stay together without it. Your Rocket Copter should now be operational again.
To replace the batteries, just take the battery group to Walmart, Target or your local drugstore and replace them with the same watch battery type.
What’s The Bottom Line On Rocket Copters
First of all, just about everyone agreed that the Rocket Copters were a fun toy when they worked. But once the lights stop working they are worthless to play with in the dark, which is the entire point of the toy. So, unless you are prepared to do a little tinkering with them when they fail, these may not be the best toy investment for you. But, if you are prepared to pop them open and do a little tinkering, they should last quite a while and provide immense pleasure to you kids.
Are Rocket Copters For You?
Do you want your kids to play outdoors more?
Do you or your kids enjoy fireworks action?
Do you have room in your yard or a nearby park for this toy?
Would you or your kids likely enjoy a lighted reusable copter like toy?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the questions above, then Rocket Copters are for you. Kids over 8 and even young adults find Rocket Copters to be a lot of fun. Who wouldn’t enjoy shooting a glistening, spinning device a hundred feet into the night sky and watch it rotate somewhat slowly back to earth? Except for fireworks, which are much, much more dangerous, this borders on the same thrill as shooting off fireworks. Boys and girls both seem to enjoy the thrill of launching Rocket Copters. Your kids will love this inexpensive toy!
